Forestry Industry Future
Wood chemistry and new products
Within the forestry sector, the Kokkola centre of expertise focuses on dendrochemistry, i.e. the chemistry of forests. The main objective is to derive new products, materials and innovations from forest materials. New products could be found in areas such as foodstuffs, chemical industry applications, composites, nanotechnology surface coatings for wood products and bioplastics. Forest biomass, including tree bark, stumps, branches, needles, leaves, berries and mushrooms could be used as raw materials for surface coatings, glue, paint, paper or construction and polymer industry applications, for example, as well as in health products or fine chemicals.
Production processes for these kinds of new products are also developed in Kokkola. Models for a biorefinery concept and forest biomass gasification, particularly for use by the SME sector, are being developed at the Kokkola University Consortium Chydenius.
