Cleantech
Solutions for a cleaner environment
The Finnish Cleantech Cluster covers approximately 60 percent of the Finnish cleantech business and 80 percent of cleantech research. In addition to four Centres of Expertise, the cluster also includes more than 400 enterprises as well as Finland’s leading universities and research centres. Cooperation between the cluster participants has already yielded numerous innovative solutions relating to energy, water, and air quality, for example. The cluster has also contributed to the creation of more than 500 new jobs in the Finnish cleantech sector.
The cluster is currently coordinating the first ever comprehensive Finnish study into the technological sectors where Finland has cutting-edge cleantech know-how and potential to succeed internationally. The cluster promotes the internationalisation of cleantech enterprises especially with regard to cooperation with Finland’s neighbours, Russia, China, the US, Japan, and India. Business clusters are being set up for this purpose, and collaboration with EU partners is also being promoted.
The Cleantech Cluster comprises Kuopio Innovation Ltd (Kuopio Region Centre of Expertise), Lahti Science and Business Park Ltd (Lahti Region Centre of Expertise), BusinessOulu (Oulu Region Centre of Expertise), and Culminatum Innovation Ltd/Green Net Finland (Helsinki Region Centre of Expertise).
Strategic priorities
The cluster’s strategic priorities are based on the internationally competitive know-how of each of the participating Centres of Expertise. One common theme that spearheads the cluster’s operation is environmental monitoring, which combines ICT and environmental know-how and is one of the fastest growing cleantech sectors worldwide. The cluster’s primary projects all relate to this theme and these links are being continuously reinforced.
National projects in the Kuopio Region include a network of technologies relating to climate, air quality, and health, as well as an initiative focusing on environmental informatics. The Lahti Region focuses on developing cleantech business by coordinating venture capital investments and internationalisation programmes, for example. In the Oulu Region, national projects relate to catalytic air purification and water purification. The most important projects in the Helsinki Region are related to environmental monitoring and urban energy efficiency.
